Health Information Technology
Posted Wednesday, December 12, 2007 by Mark Krupinski

The ever changing and challenging field of health information technology is on the minds of the American people! A recent poll conducted by a renowned research firm polled over 2000 adults last month on the spicy topic of electronic health/medical records and the risks that electronic records have in regard to privacy issues.

The poll reports that 75% of responding U.S. adults believe that patients can receive better care IF health information was shared more easily via electronic systems. The majority of polled Americans, 63%, also believe that sharing electronic records could reduce medical errors which in turn would reduce health-care costs in the United States! A full 91% of responding participants indicated that patients should have access to electronic records maintained by their medical providers.

These beliefs ensure that growth and progress in the Health Information Technology field in the United States will continue and that experts in the field will continue to be challenged with roll-outs and implementations of electronic health/medical record systems.

This is but one reason why a Health Information Technology career is stimulating, demanding and rewarding!

Health Information Techology is a career that looks bright and expanding. Men and women using techonology to save client information for future references. Do I believe that electronic data is better than paper data? Yes, it is more legible, can be easily transported, and new information can easily be added. The public polled agree that we need more HIT technecians so we can prevent medical errors in the work place.

I am perusing an HIT degree, and I am really excited to contribute to this team. I hope one day I will make a significant contribution to maintain electronic data and the community. I agree that electronic data would benefit medical information errors. I would want access to my own record and I also think it would be helpful if patients can access their own record.

The above comments are a reflection on the importance of merging the confidentiality demands of health information with the technical expertise of computer systems. Electronic records can well meet the needs of continuing medical care and maintenance of personal health records but only in a confidential, safe fashion - herein lies our challenge!

My clinic does electronic filing and I love it. If I'm at the clinic or in the hospital they can just go in the computer to get my data. I do agree that it is safe and has less errors. I also can look at my record too. The information is being put in by the doctor or nurse right in front of you. So you know its going in. Its not getting mixed up with a bunch of papers. I had medical records lost before. It made a mess of things. My question is. With the electronic filing wouldn't this cause less jobs?

With the Medical Records being put in the computors. I am for it and against it. One thing is,what if someone happens to get the codes needed to see your file or someone elses???? Who is liable?? I am taking Medical Administrative course and at the hospital I am working at, they have done some of this filing medical records on the computor. Hope I learn some of that in this course along with the other things.PS I am not sure if I am to use my personal email or schools??

I already work in helthcare. Onthe paper end. From making paperchrts and ordering a lab on a piece of paper and getting it t the lab person so they can come draw the blood to being able to push a few buttons is incredible! Being abl to send to another facility or receive patient informatin in a matter of minutes in a patient emergency is incredible. THe patient care will be beter. We will know theirhistory, allergies, etc.

I agree with the above comments. I think that medical records is a good idea also it can be a not so good thing. I work in a clinic and I've seen a situation were someone got someone elses' medical records. Just think that if patients have electronic access. You would really have to have some really good safe gaurds going on.

I agree setting up medical records electronic is way for staff to access information. Reduce the use of paper and other patients or individuals reading other patient information,

I agree with some of the comments above. I think that the records should be allowed to be seen via electronic. I think that it would help people/ patients from being mis diagnoised and also to have other phsicans to look at medical records to see maybe they might know a diagnois. However, I don't think that patients having access to their medical records via electronic is a good idea. I feel that it could invade the hippa law and cause people to get information about other people which wouldn't be good.

There are some risks to electronic medical records though that is pushing others away. In which is, the privacy of one’s records. I agree what if the records of someone get in the wrong hands? There are some kinks that have to be worked on before the use of electronic medical record’s are used.
