GRANT WRITING WORKSHOP
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4TH
2-5PM
GRANT WRITING?
Why should I learn about GRANT WRITING?
Regardless of what the spam emails claim,
there is, in fact, “free” money available for
all kinds of businesses, individuals, non-profits, and more.
It is not easy to obtain, however….
because it involves
communication through writing a grant.
We will be providing general information about grants
(the reality of getting “free” money),
basic grant writing (some Do’s and Don’t’s),
how to get started (just do it!),
and why having this skill can be a BIG BONUS to employers!
You will also receive information on a variety of free resources
if you choose to increase your grant writing skills.
Snacks will be provided.
This is a great opportunity for everyone here at Rasmussen.
Having some basic knowledge about grants and/or grant writing can assist you in being promoted at work (it can be an additional job skill),
can push you to think in even more creative ways, and for some,
grant writing is their full time job (or they are a consultant!).
So join us, Wednesday, June 4th, 2-5

How do you start a career search? If you need help, I recommend the following steps to begin your job search:
Update your resume
- Make sure you reference your transferable skills.
- Sell yourself and your skills to the employer. They want to know what they are going to get out hiring you.
- Make sure you are using the appropriate resume format (chronological, functional, and combination). Functional is often a good choice for students changing fields or that have limited previous experience.
- Show people in your field your resume. Respond to their feedback.
- Do informational interviews to give you guidance on what you might need to add, change, or remove from your resume.
- Do not leave off jobs on your resume that you will be referencing during an interview.
- Send a copy of your resume to your Career Service Advisor to go over it with a fine tooth comb. Send them an updated version when you have revised your resume.
Update your cover letter
- Make sure your cover letter explains how you found out about them, what you are going to do for them, what a brief look at your previous history, and thanks them for their time.
- Make sure it is well written and grammar/spell checked.
- Tailor it to the field you are applying to.
- Think of this is your first meeting with an employer
- Send a copy of your cover letter to your Career Service Advisor to go over it with a fine tooth comb.
- Make sure your cover letter explains how you found out about them, what you are going to do for them, what a brief look at your previous history, and thanks them for their time.
- Send them an updated version when you have revised your cover letter.
Make sure you have an appropriate alternative email address
- Make sure it is professional. Some combination of your name. Avoid nicknames.
Start the job search on the internet, though networking, newspaper ads, and career fairs
- Refer to the future programmatic leads that I provide on the website.
- Search internet resources.
- Talk to your friends, family, and acquaintances. Let them know your looking and what for. Join professional groups. Volunteer infield.
- Go to career fairs. You are speaking with someone that could hire you. Remember that. Bring resumes and dress professional. Even if nothing comes of it that day they might remember you when looking over resumes or if you go into interview.
More tips to come.
Contact your Career Service Advisor on your campus for additional help.
