Hi All,

I hope your having a wonderful break week and getting ready to ring in the new year. I know I have been pretty MIA from the posting world this past quarter. I predict in the new year you will be seeing more posts from me. You may be wondering what has been going on this quarter. Well I taught career development residentially with a blended element and it was a a blast. I loved my class they made every day a fun one. I worked at getting my students/grads jobs...this means a lot of resumes went out this past quarter. I have been volunteering a lot (Simpson Housing Family Services, Project Homeless Connect, Twin Cities Rise, and so on). I strongly suggest volunteering as it is good for a persons soul and also good as a resume builder. I have been figuring out ways to keep my house well heated this winter (a yearly struggle for me-so far I am winning mostly this year). I hope you have all stayed warm this holiday season. Please make the most of your last days break week and I will see you around campus and at this blog in the new year.

What is coming up in the new year from the Career Services Department:

  • A gigantic job fair on campus on January 21st (Rasmussen Grads and Students will get the edge if they arrive at 2:30 on the dot) from 2:30-5:30 pm Eden Prairie Campus. More to come on this.
  • A small business event talking about what it takes to start up your own business in your respective field.
  • Volunteer and Part Time event
  • Plus another panel of some sort...if you have suggestions let me know. I am currently thinking accounting. :)
  • Graduation March 14th

Best Regards,
Kelsey

  • Is their one aspect that you wish schools would emphasize to better prepare students for the CJ field?
  • What job fields do you see growing as the emphasis on CJ continues to rise?
  • Is there any job fields that are relatively unknown that will be growing as well?
  • Can a CJ degree work in a field outside of Criminal Justice?
  • How important to you believe ride-alongs or internships are to prepare student?
  • How easy do you feel it is for a CJ student to get a job in the field while still working toward their degree? Any suggestions in this realm?
  • Are there any things that will give me an edge in working in the field?

Here's a quick update from the Allied Health Professional Panel held at the Eden Prairie Campus on February 28, 2008 at 6:00 to 7:30 PM.

In attendance:

  • Amanda Steinhoff
  • Richard Kreyer
  • Cynthia Davies
  • Joel Fugleberg
  • Kelsey Kennedy

Questions rasied and answered in the recording:

  • I am attending Rasmussen to obtain my RHIT.  I would really like to know how Allied Health Professionals see the Electronic Health Record will impact coding and RHIT positions.  There are a lot of hospitals and clinics cutting down on staff.  Do they think this trend will continue or will it open up other areas?
  • In my cover letter should I mention that I have been a stay at home mom working part time jobs until my kids grew up and that now I am getting back into the work force? Would that help or hurt me?
  •  How do you enter the field with no experience?
  • What type of internship would be most beneficial? Are more better? Should I instead try to a get a full time job in the field?
  • Can I start an internship with just 2 months of school left, or will no one consider me until I am done with my courses?
  • Can I start looking for a job while I am in school in my field or will no one hire me until I have completed my program?
  • What are the benefits of specializing in out patient vs. in patient coding?
  • How many hours are typically done in an internship so that an individual begins to feel comfortable with Coding?
  • What are employers going to look for in my resume (in regards to my internship and job search)?
  • What are the different types or levels I can reach in a Coding career?
  • Do Massage Therapists receive medical insurance from their employer?
  • Should Massage Therapist pay for insurance to cover liability?
  • Is it important to get a license in different cities even before I know where I will end up working?
  • Does your location utilize transcriptionist. If so are they hired by your location or sourced out.
  • What do you think it takes to be a success in the Allied Health field?
