Mankato Builds Community through Habitat for Humanity House!

Mankato Campus
Ambassadors are seeking $1.00 donations for the Rasmussen College Habitat for Humanity House . People who donate will have
their names placed on a paper brick, which will be displayed in the student lounge. They have a goal of 150 bricks.
About Habitat for Humanity
Founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller along with his wife, Linda, Habitat has built more
than 225,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1 million people in more than 3,000
communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter.
Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses.
Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor — sweat equity — into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.
To learn more about Habitat for Humanity, and how you can get involved, visit their website at www.habitat.org.

Eden Prairie Class Tours Minnesota’s Only Maximum-Security Prison
On March 6, 2007, Region 2
Admissions Representatives joined students from the Eden Prairie Campus’ Introduction to Corrections class as they toured
Minnesota's only maximum security prison: The Oak Park Heights Correctional Facility in Stillwater, Minnesota.
Opened in 1982 to house the "worst of the worst," Oak Park Heights welcomed the tour with high concrete walls, guard towers, and razor wire. The tour group signed in, provided identification, and passed through a metal detector before meeting with the tour guide inside the prison. Soon, students were walking the same floors where Minnesota 's worst offenders - like cop-killer Guy Harvey Baker, who murdered two St. Paul police officers in 1994 - are housed.
Guided by Lt. Mark Elhenz, a 30-year veteran of Minnesota corrections with 25-years' experience at Oak Park Heights, students toured the visitation areas, education and library sections, and "discipline" segregation areas where offenders are in "lock-down" for 23-24 hours a day. Students had the opportunity to experience - first-hand, the feeling of being inside the small cell, complete with concrete walls, bolted-down metal fixtures, and dim fluorescent lighting - all of which helped bring this quarter's Criminal Justice coursework to life.
After the tour, Lt. Elhenz graciously answered a number of questions from the tour group, ranging from education needed for success in corrections to discussion about real-life experiences on the job of a correctional officer. More than just an Introduction to Corrections, the tour provided students with an invaluable experience and a real-world connection between the classroom and the Criminal Justice field.
