Why Earn a Human Resources Degree?

Many individuals select their careers based on the different interests, skills, and experiences they have had in their life. While how, when, and where we grew up has influenced our behaviors, we still have the ability to choose whichever career path we feel fits us best.

In order to help you start building your career it’s important to first determine what types of professions you’d enjoy most. If its business that interests you, keep in mind that some career fields get more attention than others. Make sure not to dismiss those career paths that may not always get the attention they deserve, such as working in human resources (HR). Remember The Drew Carey Show? He was a HR professional that helped us see working in that field is neither dull nor boring.

3 Reasons for Earning a Human Resources Degree

1.    Working in human resources may require you to juggle many different tasks at the same time. If you have a strong ability to focus on the tasks at hand, delegate responsibilities, and complete projects on time, a career in human resources may be right for you.

2.    Do you enjoy working with people? Working in this field requires the ability to communicate ideas, tasks, and much more. The courses in management and leadership will help you hone these skills and prepare you for having important conversations with your coworkers.

3.    Are you confident you are prepared to help lead change? In HR, many times you are tasked with developing and implementing company-wide projects. Learning to help direct a company’s future is a critical element to helping any organizational culture remain productive and enjoyable.

Choosing a career field is a big decision. Everyone has different reasons for entering their career field of choice. Rasmussen College Human Capital Coordinator Brendan Erickson explains why he chose to earn a Human Resources degree.

“I really wanted to find a career in which my main focus was people, I think present-day HR professionals have a unique opportunity to be the ‘owners’ of an organization’s talent, and make decisions that impact how the talent of a company is utilized to create a competitive advantage. I ultimately chose HR because of the customer service experience I had prior to college and being able to deliver that service to the employees of a company was exciting to me.”
