Community Learns to Design the Perfect Holiday Card

holidaycard1Crop, cut, layer, depth and render; do you know what these terms mean? If not, ask the dozen community members who attended the Holiday Card Design event at the Rasmussen College Mankato campus on Nov. 27, 2012. Not only did they learn how to use Photoshop®, but the community members now have a beautiful holiday card to send out this year.

“It can be intimidating at first, but if you can work a cell phone, you can learn to use a computer,” said Eric Melhorn, Rasmussen College School of Design Instructor and Program Coordinator.

Melhorn, with the help of Rasmussen College School of Business and Design Faculty member Gabe Stenzel, went step-by-step on how to use Photoshop – everything from uploading a photo to layering and editing. They provided 10 holiday card templates to choose from, and then showed those in attendance how to alter the templates to fit their photos.

This was the Holiday Card Design event’s second year. Melhorn says both events were very successful.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Melhorn. “Just like my students, I enjoy watching members of our community create something they can take home with them and be proud of.”

Elaine Deschaine of St. Peter, Minn. had never used Photoshop or a Macintosh® computer before. Her husband Dan works at theholidaycard2 Mankato campus, and together they thought this would be a fun new skill to learn.

“I loved the card design event,” said Elaine. “I wish I would have invited my girlfriends because it really was a lot of fun.”

With a little extra help, Elaine and her husband created a beautiful holiday card using a photo taken this fall. They say the one-on-one attention made it easier than expected.

“The instructors were extremely welcoming and helpful,” said Dan.

“I would have loved to stay and do all sorts of things, but they would have kicked us out,” laughed Elaine. ”The instructors were really easy to work with.”

The event was open to the entire community at no charge. Melhorn says the Mankato campus hopes to continue holding it in the future.
