Phlebotomy Certificate Courses

Graduates of our Phlebotomy Certificate gain the technical and patient skills needed to have a positive impact in today’s healthcare industry. Through a healthcare facility externship and courses that include hands-on curriculum, you also become prepared to complete a national Phlebotomy Certification exam through:

  • Practice to gain proficiency in blood draws
  • Thorough understanding of common medical procedures
  • Practice and development of skills to complete venipuncture, finger sticks, or infant heel sticks
  • Preparation of blood, urine, and other body fluid specimens for testing and analysis

Sample Course List

Introduction to Laboratory Processing
This course will introduce the role of the phlebotomist in a clinical laboratory setting. Students will learn how to adhere to safety and compliance regulations related to specimen collection and processing. This course also focuses on pre-analytic factors of the sample or patient as they relate to and influence laboratory procedures.
Phlebotomy
Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin punctures, butterfly needles, blood cultures and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing and accessioning. Utilizes a student laboratory for experiences in basic phlebotomy procedures.
Phlebotomy Externship and Capstone
This course is designed to provide the student with experience in a clinical setting that includes specimen collection and handling and processing. Students will learn to effectively communicate with diverse patient populations and patient care teams. During the practical experience, students will participate in a program capstone that is designed to assist students during their externship and prepare them for a certification exam.
