Rasmussen College to Compete for Grand Prize After Being Selected as a First-Round Winner of Nationwide Game and Application Course Development Contest

MINNEAPOLIS, (November 16, 2010) — Rasmussen College has been selected as a first-round winner of the Unity Mobile Generation Education Giveaway, a nationwide contest designed to encourage educators to develop innovative course curriculum for game programming and design for mobile and tablet PC devices. Only 20 schools were chosen to advance to the second round of the competition, where they will compete to win a classroom set of 20 Unity Android™ Pro licenses and Google Nexus One phones. Though the gaming industry is rapidly changing due to the increasing popularity of mobile games, the majority of the game design degree online and on-campus programs are still focused on traditional PC and console markets. The purpose of the Unity Mobile Generation Education Giveaway is to incentivize schools to develop course curriculum and learning materials centered on mobile game development, ultimately providing students with a strong advantage in the fast-growing mobile games segment. The winning course proposals will be announced Feb. 1, 2011.
Rasmussen College is a recognized leader in on-campus and online technology and design degrees and currently offers students advanced programs in game development, including its blended online and on-campus Bachelor’s degree in Game and Simulation Programming. The winning Rasmussen College proposal was prepared by faculty members Thomas Long and William (Bill) Sattelmeyer.
“Creating course content directed toward the rapidly expanding mobile gaming industry was a natural next step for Rasmussen College, as we remain committed to providing students with educational opportunities in fields experiencing the highest occupational growth,” Rasmussen College School of Technology and Design Director Hap Aziz said. “Our proposal involved thinking beyond standard lesson materials, combining programming design and theory with practical applications to ensure our students will be prepared to enter the field postgraduation.”
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that employment of computer software engineers, who are responsible for the development of mobile apps and video games, will increase by 32 percent from 2008 to 2018, a much faster rate than the total workforce’s 8 percent job growth projected for the same period. In addition, this occupation will see a large number of new jobs, with more than 295,000 created between 2008 and 2018.
In addition to integrating Unity Pro 3D software into its winning entry, Rasmussen College also included opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience developing simulations that employ built-in mobile device features, such as the compass, GPS, and accelerometer. The College was awarded one Unity Android Pro license and one Google Nexus One phone to further incorporate the devices into its final proposal before the three grand-prize winners are announced in February.
