Employment Situation Report Highlights Advantages For Degree Holders Despite Minimal Job Growth
Slight Job Growth Not Reflective of Drop in Unemployment Rate, Earlier Predictions

MINNEAPOLIS, (February 4, 2011)—January job growth fell far below recent estimates of 145,000 added jobs, according to the January Employment Situation Report released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. While only 36,000 added jobs were officially reported, economists find respite from the negative outlook in a slight drop of .4 percent in the unemployment rate. Though the national unemployment rate settled at 9 percent, only 4.2 percent of college graduates with a Bachelor’s degree or higher remain jobless.
“While national job growth last month was unimpressive, we remain confident in the outlook for college graduates, as the unemployment rate has continued to fall for degree holders,” National Director of Career Development for Rasmussen College Tamryn Hennessy said. “The evolving landscape of higher education has continued to open occupational doors for students interested in acquiring specific, in-demand skills for growing and emerging fields, such as healthcare and computer systems and design.”
On Thursday, Feb. 17, Rasmussen College will highlight opportunities in those industries that continue to see growth at its national Career and Networking Fair, a free, community event held at all 21 campuses bi-annually. The most recent Rasmussen College Career and Networking Fair in August 2010 boasted representation from 512 local businesses and attracted 2,679 members of 21 campus communities.
