FT. MYERS, Fla. (March 8, 2011) –Cape Coral Police Sargeant and Rasmussen College Criminal Justice degree instructor Jennifer Matlock was recently awarded Officer of the Year by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for her efforts in Crisis Intervention Training.
Sargeant Matlock teaches law enforcement at Rasmussen College in the School of Justice Studies at both the Ft. Myers, FL college campus and in our online degree program. In addition, Matlock is Sargeant of Patrol Operations/ Law Enforcement for the City of Cape Coral, and she has been with the Cape Coral Police Department since 1997.
Matlock has been involved with Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) at NAMI for several years, serving as a liaison between the police department and mental health organizations. CIT is collaboration between mental health providers, law enforcement, and family and consumer advocates, working to determine the needs of the community and coordinate police training. The focus of the CIT team is to help individuals in times of mental health crisis including suicide, bipolar disorder, Dementia, Alzheimer’s, and more.

Matlock has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Abnormal Psychology. Jennifer is trained as Law Enforcement Instructor for First Responder, CPR/ AED, and Law Enforcement Officer Suicide Prevention. She has worked patrol both daytime and nighttime, as a School Resource Officer, a citywide traffic/ cover car, a background investigator/ detective in personnel and training, marine patrol, and she has more than three years experience as a line supervisor in patrol operations. Matlock has been trained in underwater vehicle rescues, hostage negotiations, interview and interrogations, violent juvenile offenders, gang and drug recognition, as well as child molestation and sex offenders.
Matlock currently sits on the Board for the Lee County Triage Center and the FACT team as a Law Enforcement Advisor.
