BISMARCK, ND (August 7, 2012) –Rasmussen College will be celebrating National Night Out on August 7, 2012 with a number of interactive events and activities on its Bismarck Campus from 4-7 p.m. National Night Out is an annual, nationwide event aimed at preventing crime and forming neighborhood unity by encouraging partnerships between local law enforcement, residents and businesses. Rasmussen College, an active member of the Bismarck community, is dedicated to ensuring its campus communities are a safe and welcoming place for all students, staff, residents and visitors. The Bismarck Target store has joined Rasmussen College as a partner for this event and will be present on Tuesday.

The crime rate has become a concern in North Dakota with the recent oil boom and surge in population. According a recent report released by North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, crime increased 10.9 percent in North Dakota from 2010 to 2011. According to that same report, nearly 19 percent of the crime reported in 2011 in North Dakota happened in the Bismarck and Mandan communities. Police officials say simple safety precautions and observant, involved neighbors could drastically help reduce those numbers.

“The majority of our students both live and work in the Bismarck area, and we take their safety and security very seriously,” said Mary Swingle, campus director of the Rasmussen College Bismarck campus. “National Night Out is an opportunity for us to partner with local law enforcement, first responders,  and multiple community organizations to help educate residents on what they can do to keep their neighborhoods safe – we are excited about the great response we have received so far about this event.”

Rasmussen College is dedicated to making each of the communities it serves a better place by not only training the next generation of law enforcement officers through its School of Justice Studies, but also through its long history of community involvement. National Night Out events will be held on Rasmussen College campuses throughout Minnesota, Illinois, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Florida.

The National Night Out event on the Rasmussen College Bismarck campus will feature a “fire-squirt house”, multiple emergency vehicles and interactive displays from local police, sheriff, fire and rescue agencies. The National Guard, Bismarck-Mandan Safety Counsel, North Dakota Highway Patrol, Bomb Team and Crime Prevention unit will also be on hand.

“As a college, being a true leader in higher education is not just about what is delivered in our classrooms, but how we engage in our communities. It really all comes down to being a good neighbor – something that we all should do,” said Swingle.
