MINNEAPOLIS (May 20, 2014)–Rasmussen College, a regionally-accredited private college, recently attended—and was selected to present—at the Tenth World Forum on Early Care and Education. The international event, attended by early childhood leaders and practitioners from more than 80 nations, took place May 6-9 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. Cecelia Westby, representing Rasmussen College and Collegis Education, was selected to sit on an international panel of early childhood experts to discuss innovative ways to prepare future teachers. During her comments, Westby highlighted the opportunities for preparing high-quality early childhood teachers fully online.
“We need to expand access to higher education for early childhood professionals across the world if we are going to provide universal high-quality care and education for young children and their families,” said Dr. Westby, academic director of Early Childhood Education at Collegis Education, a Rasmussen College partner. “A fully online option, like Rasmussen College’s online ECE degree programs, extends access and in the process builds a larger, well-trained early childhood workforce that drives positive outcomes for children, families and our communities.”
Advocating for High-Quality Early Childhood Education
Rasmussen College has a long-standing commitment to providing the highest standard of education. To that end, Dr. Westby and members of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) also met on Capitol Hill in March to urge Congress to invest in early childhood education, such as approve the reauthorization of the Child Care and Development Block Grant program which helps low-income families afford high-quality child care. Dr. Westby and colleagues also pushed for ongoing professional development and improved compensation of early childhood educators so programs can attract and retain quality teachers and staff.
“We take our role in advancing the field of education seriously, and are proud to carry our voice to Washington with other leading education associations,” said Dr. Westby. “Congress must enact policies, provide resources and ensure as many children as possible benefit from high-quality early childhood education programs.”
