What Specialty Courses Will I Take?
While you study for your Game and Simulation Production degree, you’ll take a wide-range of interesting classes that will ready you for your new career in the gaming industry, such as:
Graphics Development with Direct X
During this course, the fundamentals of DirectX are examined and backed up by a solid foundation in software engineering practices. You will gain a Professional Game Developer understanding of how DirectX (the most current version) works. You will also be able to exhibit a programming knowledge of DirectX and will learn a practical, Software Engineering approach to creating software.
Graphics Development with Open GL
This course is designed to teach the fundamental principles of computer graphic algorithms in relation to video games and simulations. The focus is on the graphics methods used to create realistic images of scenes applied to the OpenGL system. Much of this involves finding solutions to problems, such as how 3D models are represented, describing their position and motion in 3D, projecting them into 2D images, and rendering these 2D projections with pixels. You will also study photometric problems, such as how light is represented, modeling the way objects reflect light, and the path that light takes as it refracts through the scene.
Practical Game Development w/ Lab
This course approaches the study of computer games from several interesting ways. First, you will look at examples of media that can be analyzed and critiqued for their thematic elements, formal structure, plot, and interactive appreciation. Next, you will learn about complex software subjects, technology constraints and a professional design and implementation process. Additionally, you will make a comparison of behaviors and associations to other popular art forms, learn about the principles of game design, and use them both to analyze existing games and to develop your own original game ideas.Video Games: Popular Culture & Impacts in America
In this course, you will take a critical look at games by examining the game culture phenomenon, the impact of computer games on our lives, and how our culture and psychological needs may be driving the direction of the computer game industry. You will look at how game play may reflect our lives and our inner self and explore how games are making people more solitary in one aspect, but social in another. Through your study, you will also look at what impact multi-player and role-playing games are having on our culture and the kinds of social interaction and sense of community that the players thrive for in the virtual world, as well as how these kinds of socialization different from the real world.
