Remember your last Career Fair? You probably made 20 copies of your resume, showed up, walked around, met a few people, dropped off some resumes, and waited for calls that never came. Don’t feel bad because many people do the same thing. Why? They're not prepared for the day.
Many job seekers make the mistake of thinking they can just show up, walk around, drop off their resume at a few tables, and their phone will ring. Wrong! When attending a Career Fair or Expo, you must arrive prepared with more than a resume. In addition to your impeccable resume, you have to show up with the right attitude, the right look, and thorough knowledge about the companies that are going to be there.
Begin your preparation by obtaining a list of organizations participating in the Career Expo ahead of time. Do your research, so you can find out how you can match your skills, experience, and abilities to the types of jobs they may be offering. The more you know about the company, the more you can relate to the recruiter, and the better they will remember you. If you make a good impression the recruiter will likely keep you in mind for future openings.
Second, don’t let the crowds intimidate you. If you see a company you would like to approach, but there are other people at the table talking with the recruiter, come back.
Also, be aware of yourself and your surroundings. You never know who is watching you or who may be listening to you, such as the recruiter at the next table.
Finally, this is your time to be on stage. Make sure you always have a sincere smile, have a firm handshake, and always thank the recruiter for the time they spent speaking with you.
