The Best Piece of Job Search Advice You've Never Heard

Job seekers are often given advice about the importance of researching companies before going on interviews. These individuals need to remember employers may be looking for candidate who has more than just a small bit of knowledge about their company.

Since employers screen many candidates before finding the “perfect fit,” it is important to do a great deal of research and ensure that you share similar goals to your future potential employer.

Mission statements are an excellent resource in discovering if you are on the same page as a company. Many companies utilize mission statements to stay in line with their own goals, and typically post this information directly on their websites. It is up to job seekers to be proactive and utilize the resources that are right at their fingertips.

“I believe a mission statement can be used by different people in different ways,” said Rick Bahr, chief operating officer from My Innovative Services. “As an applicant it is a window to look inside a company and identify a potential fit when considering potential employers. We utilize our mission statement when making decisions or evaluating other's decisions to ensure any actions align with our mission.”

Job seekers can utilize mission statements to make certain they want to be part of a company; however, they need to be aware that employers can utilize their mission statements to seek out candidates with a passion to fulfill their company’s goals.

“When candidates apply for positions, it is imperative that they read and understand a company’s mission statement,” said Lawrence J. Connors, FACHE, chief operating officer from St. Mary’s Hospital/St. Vincent Hospital. At St. Vincent’s and St. Mary’s, we want to hire candidates that have a strong value system to what we hold in our hospitals, which is respect, care, competence and joy. Because our mission is so important to us, we want to hire candidates that will work hard every day to fulfill this mission.”

Think about this information the next time you apply for a job or go in for an interview. Having knowledge about a company is only one component. Make sure you share the passion and have the ability to show the employer how you will benefit them by striving to meet their mission.
