Career Expo: Do's and Don'ts of Job Interviewing

Prior to joining Rasmussen College as a Program Manager, I worked in Human Resources at a four star, four diamond hotel for 21 years, and 11 of those years I worked as the Employment Manager. I saw the best and worst of applicants and interviews. With the annual Rasmussen College Career Expo coming up on Thursday, August 16, I thought it would be a good time to discuss the do's and don’ts of job interviewing.

1. Your dress should be appropriate to the culture of the company. If your potential employer is conservative, cover all tattoos and piercings. First impressions are usually made within seconds of meeting someone for the first time.

2. Do your homework and research the company. It shows that you are thorough and what type of an employee you will be.

3. If you do not know the location of the interview, do a trial run trip the day before, so you can arrive on time and prepared. Arriving a few minutes early is good, but do not arrive much more than 10 minutes early. Showing up too early can be perceived as a sign of desperation. Make sure you are in the area in plenty of time, so you are not stuck in traffic or in danger of getting lost.

4. Avoid answering interview questions with a yes or no. It is better to give examples. Tell your potential employer how you handled a difficult situation or give an example of being a team player. Perhaps say what you think a former supervisor would say about your work. Do not be arrogant, but remember you are SELLING yourself.

5. NEVER speak poorly of a former employer or supervisor.

6. If you are asked what skills you need to improve on, be honest, but indicate that you are working on improving them. For example, if you lack computer skills, enroll in a computer class.

7. Be aware that your interview begins the moment you arrive. Your interactions with other associates will be observed, and not just with the person you are interviewing with.
