Six Tips For Marketing Yourself In A Job Search

You’ve put in countless hours studying for your college degree, sacrificed sleep and at times your sanity, and have finally graduated! Now what? Obviously, once you have your degree in hand, your dream job isn’t just given to you on a silver platter. Finding a job doesn’t have to make you want to pull your hair out. If you stay confident and positive, job hunting can be a fun and rewarding experience.

Here are some helpful tips to not only help you professionally market yourself, but to maintain your emotional and physical well-being as you are searching.

1. Network Away: We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s not what you know, but who you know.”  In today’s economy, this is becoming more and more relevant. While tools like and LinkedIn are great to post your resume and find contacts, it’s crucial to make real connections with real people. Be inquisitive; ask about job openings and advice from those already established in your desired vocation. One of the best things you can do, not just for your blooming career but also for your life in general, is to build a network based on relationships. As you help people connect with others, they will be likely to return the favor and before you know it, doors of opportunity will fly open.

2. Be Confident: Confidence is key as a job seeker. Employers notice when you believe in yourself and hold your head high. Here are some great ways to exude confidence to your prospective employer:

  • When you are at an interview, look the person in the eyes
  • Sit up straight
  • Shake hands firmly

These simple things will display your capability to work hard and be a reliable employee. At the same time, you shouldn’t make promises you can’t keep. Don’t oversell yourself or brag but what you do know, make sure you know it well.

3. Be Professional and Be Yourself: During an interview, make sure that you convey who you are as a person. I know this is a difficult task if you are nervous, but when a employer gets a glimpse of your true personality, they will likely remember your unique attributes. During an interview, think outside the box when it comes to life experiences that have prepared you for your field.

4.  Follow Up: Do your due diligence and follow up after an interview with a hand-written note. Though it may seem old-school, a follow-up note will show employers that you are truly interested in the position.

5. Take Breaks: While your career choice is imperative, there are things in life such as family, friends, and even personal wellness that are just as important. If it takes longer to find a job then you expected, do not give up hope. Continue to pursue the things you are passionate about as you are waiting. If you begin to feel depressed, get active. Go volunteer in your community or visit a friend. Don’t feel like every waking moment you need to be job hunting. Do what you need to do but don’t over exert yourself. Remind yourself what you have in life and choose to be thankful. 

6. Have Fun: There are many companies that are not only professional, but are also innovative and fun.  For example, Skechers is just one company that aims to succeed while having fun in the process.
