Many say the single greatest investment is their house.

I want you to take a second to think about the most valuable thing you have in your possession.

If it isn’t a house, maybe you thought of your car, your truck, or your wedding ring; but I believe with 100 percent certainty that your college degree is your most valuable possession.

Your degree is the only possession you will take out of this hall today that is completely and utterly permanent.

It can’t burn down in a fire or wash away in a flood.

They say the saying is, “Diamonds are forever,” but a diamond can be lost.

College degrees are forever.

Your degree becomes part of the identity you carry your whole life and part of the legacy you leave behind when you leave this earth.

No other possession will be as precious or everlasting as the degree you receive today, unless you get a higher degree.

Then, the only thing more valuable will be your next degree.

A bachelor’s, masters, maybe a doctorate.

If you think this day feels wonderful, imagine your next graduation.

Believe me, the next graduation gets better.

And your sense of pride and achievement will only grow.

I am so incredibly impressed by your achievement, especially when I consider how you’ve all taken remarkably different paths to get here.

Each of your stories is extraordinary.

You inspire me to work harder to help my students achieve their goals and I thank you for that.

Thomas Edison has been credited saying, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

You’ve all faced adversity along the way to finishing your degree.

And, I am sure when things were bad, you never thought you’d be here, you’d get to this place, this moment, to this day.

Congratulations.

At times, your obstacles may have seemed insurmountable, but look around you.

You are here, you are here.

Congratulations.
