RASMUSSEN COLLEGE LAND O’ LAKES HOSTS DISTRICT FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA COMPETITION FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Over 150 high school students compete in the areas of business ethics, public speaking, network design, and parliamentary procedures for a chance to go on to state competition
Land O’ Lakes, Fla. (January 31, 2012) – When Edmond Boateng, a senior at Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel, Fla. joined Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), he knew his involvement would help prepare him for his college career. “It was something to help me in my future,” he said. “FBLA provides a strong foundation for going into my major in business.” So when Rasmussen College in Land O’Lakes, Fla. hosted 16 high schools and over 150 high school students for the district competition on Friday, January 27, Boateng had the opportunity to put his skills to the test against his peers from surrounding communities.
Students in Future Business Leaders of America participated in competitions around a variety of topics including business ethics, public speaking, network design, parliamentary procedure and more. The competitions began at 9 a.m. and were completed around noon. FBLA is a nonprofit education association with over 215,000 high school student members nationwide that prepare them for careers and business-related fields.
“The students spend so much time throughout the year preparing for the district competition; this is like the glue that brings it all together for them,” commented Donna Fraser, a teacher at Wiregrass Ranch High School. “Today is about everything they’ve worked on throughout the year. It’s their chance to take their classroom learns and apply them to real life.”
This is the seventh year that Rasmussen College has hosted the local competition.
“Rasmussen College was honored to once again host such a great event for our local high school students,” said Rasmussen College Land O’ Lakes Campus Director Mike Ramos. “Each student was very prepared for the days’ events and the time and effort they spent into studying for this competition was very evident in their performance – they should all be very proud.”
Students in Friday’s competition were competing for a chance to qualify for the state competition in April. Top placements from that round then qualify to go on to the national competition in Texas. Winners from Friday’s district competition will be announced on Thursday, February 2 at River Ridge High School in New Port Richey, Fla.
Boateng continued, “Today has been extremely pleasing. The Rasmussen College campus is wonderful and welcoming. I feel very proud to be here.”
