Rasmussen College to Host Free Community Career Fairs Nationwide
Employers say they’re hiring and are looking for candidates with strong transferable skills
Minneapolis (October 19, 2015)–Rasmussen College, a regionally accredited private college and Public Benefit Corporation, will host more than 20 free Community Career Fairs nationwide Oct. 21-29 to help community members, students and graduates advance their job-seeking skills and land their dream job by gaining access to career experts and local employers with open positions. Job-seekers will have the opportunity to network with potential employers, receive LinkedIn and resume consultations, participate in mock interviews, gain professional dress advice, identify career paths that fit their experience and skill set, and learn how to showcase the key transferable skills most sought after by today’s employers.
Employers are Hiring – Leadership Gap Looms
With the national unemployment rate at just 5.1 percent, Rasmussen College recognizes it is a job-seekers’ market and is looking to help employers in its campus communities fill open positions with highly skilled workers. In fact, of the 600 employers participating in the Rasmussen College Community Career Fair, more than 50 percent indicated on a September 2015 survey that they plan to hire more in the next 12 months than they did last year. In addition, there is a pending leadership gap as the largest generation in U.S. history — baby boomers — retires from the workforce and leaves openings for management positions.
“Today’s employers are looking for candidates with relevant education and work experience combined with critical transferable skills such as critical thinking and communication,” said Tamryn Hennessy, vice president of careers services and public benefit initiatives at Rasmussen College. “These are the skills that help workers succeed and advance inside an organization and are also the skills needed to help fill the leadership positions open in so many organizations.”
According to the 2015 survey, the transferable skills most important when employers are evaluating a candidate include:
- Communication – 92%
- Ethics and Professional Responsibility – 73%
- Critical Thinking – 59%
- Diversity and Teamwork – 55%
- Information Literacy – 11%
- Digital Fluency – 10%
The College also asked its students which transferable skills they see as their greatest strengths.
- Communication – 76%
- Diversity – 70%
- Ethics and Professional Responsibility – 69%
- Critical Thinking – 65%
- Information Literacy – 28%
- Digital Fluency – 15%
“As a job-seeker, demonstrating these transferable skills will help set you apart from other candidates and may just help you advance your career faster — even if you don’t have several years of experience,” Hennessy said. “Rasmussen College career services experts will be available at our career fairs to help job-seekers highlight how they can highlight specific examples of these important transferable skills from previous employment or educational experiences.”
