Rasmussen College Library System Awarded Cultural Book Collection
Book and DVD collection will help educate students on Muslim beliefs and practices
Bloomington, Minn. (Jan. 30, 2013) – The Rasmussen College Library is one of 840 libraries and state humanities councils across the country selected to receive the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA). The program aims to familiarize the public with the people, places, history, faith and cultures of Muslims in the Unites States and around the world.
“We are thrilled to be one of just 259 college libraries to receive this unique collection,” said Emily O’Connor, Director of Library and Learning Services at Rasmussen College. “These resources are the beginning of a dialogue with faculty, staff and students to extend several quarters, culminating in our One College, One Book diversity program in the Fall Quarter. We are grateful for this opportunity and look forward to sharing these resources and related programs with our College community.”
The Muslim Journeys Bookshelf collection is made up of twenty-five books, three documentary films, a one-year subscription to Oxford Islamic Studies Online and a DVD of short films titled Islamic Art Spots.
“I received a brochure to apply for the collection in the mail last summer and knew this would be a valuable addition to our library,” said Dennis Johnson, Rasmussen College Librarian. “It’s important for our students to understand the Muslim culture and its diverse history.”
The collection will be shared with all Rasmussen College campus libraries. To learn more about the Rasmussen College Library and Learning Center visit www.Rasmussen.edu/student-life/library-services .
