Also known as medical secretaries, these individuals answer and direct phone calls, greet visitors and converse with patients to learn the purpose of their visit or to complete necessary documents. They schedule and confirm appointments, compile medical charts and record reports and correspondence.

Medical assistants must have a foundational knowledge of medical terms and procedures and must possess strong customer service skills. Extreme focus and attention to detail are also imperative as work will often be important, yet somewhat repetitive. Individuals should also be comfortable working with various software and technology to perform daily tasks.

2. Medical transcriptionist

Career outlook (2012 – 2022): 8 – 14 percent

Median annual salary (2014): $34,750

Medical transcriptionists are responsible for transforming medical recordings into written reports, meaning strong typing skills are a must. Often drafts can be produced through speech recognition software, in which case a medical transcriptionist must review the draft and revise any mistakes in grammar or style. They must also check for inconsistencies or missing information that could compromise a patient’s health.

Attention to detail is extremely important in this position as well as critical thinking skills. Individuals must also have a basic knowledge of medical terms and procedures. Medical transcriptionists can work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, physicians’ offices, transcription service companies or even from their own home.

3. Medical billing administrators

Career outlook (2012 – 2022): 15 – 21 percent

Median annual salary (2014): $34,410

These professionals manage patient insurance policies and billing. They deal with paperwork and data entry for contracts and ensure bills are paid on time. They also prepare itemized statements or invoices and verify accuracy of billing data.

Medical billing administrators have to have a detailed understanding of the various types of insurance plans patients may have. These positions will likely require an associate degree or certificate in medical billing and coding or medical administrative assistance.

4. Medical coding

Career outlook (2012 – 2022): 22 percent or higher

Median annual salary (2014): $35,900

Medical coders, also called health information technicians, organize health information data. They review patient records to check for timely, complete, accurate and appropriate data that is electronically stores for easy access. It is their duty to ensure this health information remains secure and organized.

Medical coding does not require a degree, but specific training will likely be a prerequisite upon being hired. A certificate or diploma is a good way to get started in the field, but you must be willing to learn and adapt to new technology as the industry evolves.
