Career recruitment website Glassdoor recently released a report titled “25 Best Jobs in America for 2015.” Of the 25 positions highlighted, 10 of them are related to technology, which suggests now’s a great time for job-seekers looking to break into the field.

Why are these positions so promising? It all comes down to supply and demand, according to Myles Rothacker, founder of digital advertising agency Atlanta Marketing Professionals. He says it’s extremely difficult for employers to find people with technical degrees and ambition to succeed. “If you have both, there are no limits to how far you can go or how much you can make in a technology career,” Rothacker says.

So what are the best technology jobs to pursue in 2015? We identified five of the top options based on job openings and earning potential.

These professionals develop algorithms and solve programming problems, meaning they must possess strong programming skills. It’s also important to have strong interpersonal skills as their job often includes directing or consulting with others in order to ensure needs are being met.

2. Database administrator

Median annual salary: $78,520

Education requirements: 77 percent of advertised jobs call for a bachelor’s degree (most commonly a computer science degree).

Job description: Database administrators (DBAs) store and organize data for organizations spanning all industries. Any type of information a business must retain—such as customer data or financial records—is kept on record and managed by a DBA. These tech pros are tasked with securing sensitive data and employ a healthy balance of technical and interpersonal skills.

3. QA engineer

Job openings: 98,118

Median annual salary: $82,340

Education requirements: 85 percent of advertised jobs call for a bachelor’s degree (most commonly a computer science degree).

Job description: Quality assurance (QA) engineers test websites, software and applications to ensure the product is functioning properly before it goes live. This includes developing the test procedures, overseeing its execution, documenting any defects encountered and ensuring they are corrected before the scheduled launch date. QA engineers must be excellent critical thinkers and possess strong time management skills.

4. Network engineer

Job openings: 95,414

Median annual salary: $95,380

Education requirements: 75 percent of advertised jobs call for a bachelor’s degree (most commonly a computer science degree).

Job description: Network engineers are responsible for designing and implementing any data communications networks within an organization. These professionals work with customers and staff to determine user needs, adjusting network sizes to meet volume demands. They’re also in charge of coordinating any new equipment installation, maintenance, repairs or upgrades, meaning strong customer services skills are imperative.

5. IT project manager

Job openings: 68,770

Median annual salary: $82,340

Education requirements: 86 percent of employers prefer candidates to have a bachelor’s degree (most commonly an IT management degree).

Job description: Information technology (IT) project managers serve as liaisons between the business and technical aspects of a project. They plan projects, manage budgets and oversee technical staff to ensure deadlines and goals are met. Communication skills are imperative for these professionals to delegate tasks and translate highly technical information into layman’s terms.
