Avoid Getting Sick At College

Like it or not, college can be a breeding ground for sickness illness. In fact, CollegeTips.com reports that campuses can be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria, thanks to close quartered classrooms and living space. It's often hard to determine who's under the weather and many students may be contagious without showing any symptoms. Here are some tips you may want to keep in mind to avoid sickness in college:college sickness

Obtain Proper Vaccinations

Many colleges require you to obtain certain vaccinnations before you enter your first day of class to protect you from some of the worst and most prominent illnesses like meningitis and hepatitis. It is a good idea to get vaccines for other ailments too, like chicken pox, if you haven't had them yet, as you may be exposed to more illnesses in a crowded college campus. You might even consider getting a flu shot to avoid any strains of influenza.

Wash Your Hands

Washing your hands is the easiest way to avoid infection, especially if you've been touching frequently used objects such as doorknobs, hand rails, or public computer keyboards. You may also want to stock up on antibacterial hand sanitizer and carry it around in your school bag.

Get Checked Out

You may think you feel well enough to go to class, but you may be risking the health of your instructor and other classmates. As soon as you are feeling a bit under the weather, visit your doctor and find out whether or not you're contagious. If you are contagious, this is not the time to be an overachiever. Rehydrate by drinking plenty of fluids.

Additional tip: If you are out ill, be sure to notify your instructor  that you'll be missing class and see if anyone in your class can tag-team to give you any worksheets or assignments you may have missed.

Stay Healthy

If you get the right amount of sleep, eat healthy foods, and exercise, your body should be able to protect itself against many of the illnesses and diseases you come in contact with. Keep a pulse on your health. This is the only body you ever get, and you want to make sure that you stay in tip-top shape while in college. Absenteeism can severely detriment your grades.
