Top Ten Time Management Tips

Do you feel there is not enough time in the day? Have you begun to feel you are falling behind or getting overwhelmed? Don’t fret. These time management tips will get you back on track – David Letterman style.

10. Write it Down.

Use a calendar, paper or electronic, and write down all of your assignments. Writing something down reinforces the concept in your mind.

9. Budget Your Time.

Time is finite. There are only 7 days in a week and 24 hours in a day. It is important to budget your time; similar to how you budget your money. Remember to budget for everything: class hours, homework time, family, chores, and even fun. Budget time instead of writing to-do lists.

8. Use Timer Tools.

It is easy to get distracted when you are working on a project or even doing the laundry. Keep track of the time you spend by using a timer tool like This will allow you to see if your time budget is accurate or if you need to adjust it.

7. Utilize your Resources.

At Rasmussen College, there are numerous resources to make your life easier. Don’t waste time being frustrated because you can’t log onto the student portal – call personal support. If you have a lingering question about a math problem, log onto the tutoring center for immediate help.

6. Expect the Unexpected.

Even if you are glass half-full type of person, things can go wrong in life. Previous proper planning prohibits poor performance. For example, have a back-up plan in case your internet goes down; it is important to know where you can access free Wi-Fi. Also, consider what would happen if your car broke down – have a backup driver or know your local bus route.

5. Multi-task.

It’s often possible to combine multiple activities. For example, Rasmussen College offers audio books in their library collection. These books could be listened to while you commute to school. Consider listening to your favorite television show while you fold laundry or read a chapter in your book while waiting for a dental appointment.

4. Limit Distractions.

Find an uninterrupted space to study and complete assignments. Be sure to log off of social media sites like Facebook, turn off your phone, and close the door. For some students, the library or learning center on campus is the ideal study location. If you must study at home, consider using a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door.

3. Just Say “NO”.

Even though “no” only has two letters, it is one of the hardest words to say. However, it is important to say no when someone asks you to do something that doesn’t fit into your time budget.

2. Don’t Re-Invent the Wheel.

Try to systemize repetitive tasks. For example, keep frequently visited websites in your favorites. Also, consider creating a template for APA style including the Title and Reference Page.

1. The Early Bird Catches the Worm.

Complete assignments early in the day, early in the week or early in the quarter. The early bird catches the worm and the A+’s!

Don’t waste any more time. Implement these time management tips today for a better tomorrow.
