MINNEAPOLIS (January 21, 2016)–Rasmussen College, a regionally accredited private college and Public Benefit Corporation, today announced the expansion of its innovative Flex Choice® learning option to the College’s nine remaining bachelor’s and associate’s degree programs not already available with Flex Choice. Flex Choice is a pioneering learning model within the evolving realm of competency-based education (CBE). It allows students to take self-paced, competency-based courses alongside their traditional courses at no additional cost – saving them money and time. Depending on the degree program and number of self-paced courses students choose to take, they can save up to 45 percent in tuition costs when compared to the cost of taking only traditional, faculty-led courses at Rasmussen College. With this expansion, Flex Choice will be added immediately to the following programs:
Associate’s Degree Programs
- Human Resources and Organizational Leadership
- Surgical Technologist
- Law Enforcement
- Web Programming
- Software Application Development
Bachelor’s Degree Programs
“This expansion marks a significant milestone for Rasmussen College as we continue finding ways to provide more flexible and affordable learning options for the diverse learning needs of our students,” said Dr. Trenda Boyum-Breen, president, Rasmussen College. “Flex Choice also helps us meet the needs of employers, as we can get skilled employees into the workforce faster.”
Increased Demand for CBE
CBE is gaining significant interest nationwide as a way to provide flexible and affordable instruction and assessment. Students demonstrate learning and mastery of skills at their own pace, rather than being assessed by the traditional seat-time model.
At Rasmussen College, students prove mastered concepts and complete the no-cost, self-paced courses when it’s convenient for them. So far, nearly 900 students have completed one or more self-paced courses through the Flex Choice learning option since it launched in May 2014 – adding up to tuition savings of more than $1.8 million. Over the past year, the number of students enrolled in Flex Choice has grown more than 200 percent.
“When we launched Flex Choice with just one program, we knew there would be demand to open the learning option to students across our seven schools of study, which is why the College moved quickly to grow our suite of self-paced courses and expand Flex Choice to all degree programs,” Dr. Boyum-Breen said. “We did so by working closely with faculty members to bring subject matter expertise into the curriculum and maintain the rigor and quality for which our courses are known. Rasmussen College is proud to be one of the first higher education institutions to bring this flexible learning model to students, and we are committed to ongoing research and innovation to advance CBE delivery models within the higher education industry.”
