Rasmussen College Remembers Board Member Thurston E. Manning, Ph.d.
An advocate and supporter of higher education for over 50 years, Dr. Manning served numerous colleges and universities as both a professor and a president.
Minneapolis (July 29, 2014)–Rasmussen College, a regionally accredited private college, is remembering its beloved Board Member, Thurston E. (Ted) Manning, Ph.D., who passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2014. Dr. Manning, who was an inspirational Board member and avid supporter in career-focused education for Rasmussen College, will be deeply missed. He was 88.
“Ted was a personal friend and strong advocate for Rasmussen College and the educational opportunities we provide to students,” said Henry S. Bienen, Ph.D., chairman of the board for Rasmussen College. “His positive impact and influence on the higher education industry will resonate amongst colleges and universities for years to come.”
Dr. Manning attended Colorado College and graduated magna cum laude in 1946. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He received his doctorate in physics from Yale in 1949.
“Ted was an extremely accomplished scholar and executive in higher education, and he left an indelible mark in the industry,” said Robert E. King, executive chairman of Rasmussen, Inc. “We had a deep friendship, and I will miss many things about him. Most of all, I will miss his wry wit, friendly and competent manner and his sound advice and counsel.”
In July 1950, Dr. Manning married Jeanne L. Harrisberger and settled in Oberlin, Ohio for the next fourteen years where he was a member of the physics faculty at Oberlin College and was named the first Provost in 1960. They had three children during their time there: Julia, Peter and Ellen.
In 1964, Dr. Manning joined the staff and faculty of the University of Colorado, where he served as the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty of the University of Colorado from 1964 to 1971.
In 1992, Dr. Manning became a self-employed consultant in higher education administration and accreditation. He has been a Director of DeVry, Inc. (1990-2004) and a Director of SunGard Higher Education Managed Services, Inc. (also known as Collegis Inc.) and most recently a Board Director at Rasmussen College.
Dr. Manning is survived by his three children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
