Rasmussen College To Host Discussion With Graduate Students Spearheading Effort To Save Historic Tampa Landmark
USF Graduate Students, Abney Henderson and Brandy Langley Speak at Rasmussen College on Push to Save the Jackson House in Tampa.
Land O’ Lakes, Fla. (March 20, 2012) – Rasmussen College Land O’ Lakes campus has invited Abney Henderson and Brandy Langley to speak at the “Rasmussen Reads” book club discussion March 27 at 6:30 p.m. in order to highlight their recent research on a local historic landmark. The University of South Florida graduate students have organized an effort to raise money to restore the historic Jackson House.
“We are excited to have Abney and Brandy come to our campus to help educate our students, faculty and the community about this important piece of history,” said Rasmussen College Campus Director Mike Ramos, “Our campus book club is a chance for our campus community to discuss literature, history and current events. We are excited to learn more about the Jackson House and what Rasmussen College can do to help in its preservation efforts.”
The 24-room establishment began as a six-room cottage built by Moses and Sarah Jackson in 1901. The home offered accommodations to many African Americans during an era of racial segregation when they were not accepted in standard hotels. Entertainers such as, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald and James Brown are known to have stayed in the home.
Langley and Henderson hope to raise the nearly $1 million needed to restore the dilapidated home. Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to the Rasmussen College campus on Tuesday, March 27, at 6:30 p.m. to learn more about this effort and discuss the book of the month “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett.
