As a Rasmussen University Medical Assisting program student, you get to start practicing your medical assistant skills at home to be better prepared when you arrive on campus. Choose to attend live online and interactive lectures or listen to lectures at a time and place that’s convenient for you.

Online video tutorials help you practice before you perform clinical procedures with Medical Assistant students and faculty at the Hennepin/Anoka campus labs and mock clinicals. You’ll review how to perform injections, blood draws, EKG testing, emergency management, transferable skills and more—all in the comfort of your home.

What Types of Medical Assisting Diploma Courses Will I Take?

Medical assistants are expected to assist medical providers with clinical procedures, medical office administrative services and more, but that doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on the convenience of online courses. Medical Assistant students experience a combination of easy-to-navigate online courses and in-person collaboration in core courses at our Hennepin/Anoka campus.

    • Review basic medical terminology and vocabulary
    • Understand prefixes and suffixes, Latin and Greek origins and anatomic roots denoting body structures of the terms

What Medical Assistant Skills Will I Gain?

Direct Patient Care and Admin Responsibilities

Assist physicians and other health care workers with direct patient care management, medical computer scheduling, insurance billing, medical software and a variety of office administrative procedures.

Medical Clinical Procedures

Discuss clinical procedures and laboratory diagnostic procedures, such as administering injections, obtaining vital signs, performing EKGs, drawing blood and assisting in minor surgical procedures.

Clinical Confidence

Develop the necessary clinical skills and build your confidence to perform routine clinical tasks, including scheduling and collecting laboratory specimens, clinical lab testing, and safety skills in a medical or health care setting.

    Renovated in 2022, the Hennepin/Anoka campus is located at 5555 96th Avenue North, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, north of the 610 off-ramp and south of 96th Avenue North, near the borders of both Hennepin and Anoka counties. The area boasts new healthcare facilities and many new restaurants for dining and relaxing.

    Our labs help prepare medical assistants for what they'll experience in laboratory diagnostic procedures at a local health care corporation. Medical Assistant (and other Health Sciences) and Nursing students learn clinical procedures and administrative duties at our recently renovated labs, including:

  • What exams can students pursue to become certified medical assistants?

    While medical assistant programs can develop your clinical duties, medical software experience and administrative services, community and area employers will expect certification. The Rasmussen University Medical Assisting Diploma program will prepare you for the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).7 Plus, the fee for the first attempt at each certification exam is included in the total program cost.8

    After our Medical Assistant program, you may also qualify to register and sit for additional certification exams (exam fees not included) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)9:

    • CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician)
    • CMAA (Certified Medical Administrative Assistant)
