From an early age, Jenna Haring says she’s been interested in both law and government relations. It’s the reason the School of Justice Studies graduate says she decided to pursue her Paralegal Associate’s degree from the Rasmussen College Blaine campus.
“I like being a part of a process that affects everyone, and I like problem-solving and that’s what paralegal work is,” said Haring. “I considered becoming a lawyer, but after doing some research I discovered there are not a lot of job openings. There are, however, more jobs for paralegals.”
Haring just graduated with her degree in March 2013. While in school, Haring also worked full-time at the Minnesota State Capitol; she says that her job and school went well together. An internship with the Minnesota House of Representatives actually led to her job in April 2012. She continues to work as a legislative aid in the Joint Services Department.
“We serve both the house and the senate,” said Haring. “Our department does a lot of fiscal notes for bills. I also get to work with sub-committees on claims, which is similar to paralegal work because I have to keep track of multiple claims that come from all over Minnesota, including research and writing letters.”
On top of the hands-on skills, Haring says she’s also learned to work with a diverse group of people, something she knows she’ll face in the paralegal world.
“We all have different ideas and point of views, so it’s important to learn to respect other’s opinions,” said Haring.
Haring loves her job so much that she plans to continue working at the capitol through law school – her next academic adventure.
“After much consideration I decided to take the LSAT and attend law school here in the Twin Cities,” said Haring. “After that, I’d either like to work for a law firm or in government relations.”
The recent graduate has this advice for other students.
“I would say to network as much as possible and use your career services advisor at Rasmussen College to help you make those connections,” said Haring.
