Amidst Surging Demand For Mobile Applications, Rasmussen College Launches Degree Program To Prepare Future Developers

According to a recent article by CNET News, Apple alone garnered $1.78 billion in app sales in 2010, and the global market for mobile application sales is forecasted to grow another 81.5 percent in 2011, totaling almost $4 billion in sales. Plus, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 34 percent growth in jobs for Computer Software Application Engineers through 2018.

“The technology industry is continually evolving, and mobile apps are going to dominate the industry over the next several years,” Director of the Rasmussen College School of Technology and Design Hap Aziz said. “These new degree programs at Rasmussen College will prepare students to lead this emerging technology trend and gain the skills they need to build successful mobile applications for the most used platforms, including the Android and iOS (iPhone, iPad, etc).”

The Associate’s degree in Software Application Development, which will initially be offered at Rasmussen College campus locations in Florida and Minnesota—although we expect to be able to expand these programs to other campuses in the near future—will prepare students for entry level positions in software development. Students will take courses in software design, and programming, develop software applications especially for mobile devices, and complete a working mobile application as a part of their graduate portfolio. After students earn their Associate’s degree, they can transition smoothly into the Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science should they want to continue their study of computer software, systems and applications.

In the Computer Science Bachelor’s program, students can use their love of computer systems to advance your career in software engineering. Students can experience an industry-leading curriculum that includes modern object-oriented programming languages, such as Java and C++, taught in an integrated development environment (IDE) that facilitates advanced programming techniques and software management. Students will study algorithm analysis, and applied math in designing computer systems and discrete structures, and develop applications for the web and mobile devices.
