12 of the Best Data Science Blogs Data Pros Should Be Tracking
By Brianna Flavin on 05/30/2022
Data science is an undeniably fascinating technology niche that’s at the bleeding edge of tech-driven progress and innovation. Whether you’re well-established in the field or maybe just considering a pivot to a data-focused career, blogs are one of the best ways to stay up to date on some of the biggest changes and developments in any industry.
A great data science blog could save you lots of time and research—while keeping you informed (and maybe even entertained) along the way.
Despite the number of amazing and talented data science professionals out there, it’s not always easy to find a high-quality blog dedicated to the field. If you could use a few data science blogs to bookmark and check in on, then keep reading.
12 Data science blogs that’ll help you keep a pulse on the industry
We combed through data science blogs of all shapes and sizes to help you grow in your knowledge of this exciting industry. Here’s a list of our favorites:
1. Data Science Central®
Data Science Central describes itself as a community for big data practitioners. With multiple posts a day, this blog is rich in content and easy to navigate. They even feature the occasional video or webinar for coverage on topics that need more explanation.
If you only follow one blog to keep yourself educated on what’s happening in data science, this one is a great pick.
A lot of the content here focuses on how data science is applied by businesses. That perspective can be super helpful to budding data pros looking to learn more about what’s possible with data in a professional setting.
Distill is an academic journal that publishes some of the richest multimedia data content out there. Featured authors typically have sterling credentials in data science, machine learning, research and more, making this blog an excellent source for highly credible, peer-reviewed information.
If you could use more understanding of complex, scholarly information, there’s a good chance Distill will help you visualize and internalize it easier than a typical textbook. Check out their article on a gentle introduction to graph neural networks to see what we mean.
Unfortunately, it should be noted that the site is in the midst of a hiatus that began in 2021, and it’s not yet clear if it will ever fully return to a regular publishing schedule. Even with that caveat, there’s plenty of great information to take in from what’s already published.
3. Analytics Vidhya’s Big Data blog
Analytics Vidhya’s Big Data blog is home to a vibrant community of data professionals. It features tons of high-quality, user-submitted content from people heavily involved with the field. Here, you’ll find everything: step-by-step tutorials, data best practices, industry insight, case studies and more.
4. KD Nuggets
KD Nuggets—the “KD” standing for “Knowledge Discovery”—is a longstanding and highly regarded site filled with posts on data science, analytics and machine-learning subjects. The content tends to be more advanced than some of the surface-level information you’ll find on other data blogs, with plenty of statistical examples and analytics supporting the posts.
Post titles range from the practical “4 Factors to Identify Machine Learning Solvable Problems” to the humorous “Every time someone runs a correlation coefficient on two time series, an angel loses their wings.” This site is updated multiple times daily and is an absolute must-bookmark site for anyone interested in the field.
5. Google® News: Data Science
Like with a lot of technology topics, the “just Google it” approach can be surprisingly useful. While this entry is not an independently curated site, searching for Data Science via Google News can provide a quick stream of news and updates from a variety of publications.
Interviews with thought leaders and hiring and job posting updates mix with announcements about major data company decisions and useful advice. If it provides nothing else, you may at least be introduced to new publications you’ve yet to discover with this approach.
6. O’Reilly® Radar
The O’Reilly Radar blog can help you keep tabs on a variety of subjects directly related to data science, including artificial intelligence, security, machine learning, Big Tech industry news and more. Recently covered subjects include data privacy, AI adoption, monthly trends in tech and antitrust regulation.
Also worth noting is the O’Reilly Data Show podcast—always a nice option if you prefer to get your industry news during a commute.
7. Simply Statistics
If you’re looking for a no-nonsense take on statistic and data science topics, Simply Statistics is a great pick for you. Simply Statistics offers a simple, highly readable format with posts focusing on quality statistical analysis, data science and research. Three biostatistics professors created this blog because they were fired up about this new era where data is abundant and statisticians become scientists.
“People vs. Institutions in Data Analysis,” “Rethinking Academic Data Sharing” and “How Do Machines Learn?” are some examples of topics you will find.
8. Stack Exchange® Cross Validated
While this is another entry that might not follow the traditional format of a blog, Stack Exchange’s Cross Validated community is too valuable of a resource to leave out. This site is more of a question-and-answer forum for people interested in statistics, machine learning, data analysis, data mining and data visualization—and there’s plenty of valuable insight to be found. This site can be an excellent way to keep tabs on what experts in data are talking about and whom to consult with when you’re stuck. Just keep in mind, like with any online forum, the content can be hit and miss.
9. Women in Big Data
Women in Big Data was formed by big data experts who wanted to see better gender representation for women in the industry. While there are plenty of useful data science posts on here, the forte of Women in Big Data is their coverage of industry events. Meetups, technical conferences and data events are highlighted with detailed notes about presenters, important trends and takeaways.
If you don’t have the time to get to events in the industry, then keep tabs on this blog and you can still glean plenty of useful information.
10. IBM® Journey to AI
IBM’s Journey to AI blog features loads of content geared toward business leaders and data scientists alike. You will see articles like “If data is the new oil, ISO 20022 is the new gasoline” and “How a data fabric overcomes data sprawls to reduce time to insights.”
While not always a light read, this blog will help you imagine all sorts of applications for data and better understand the impact those applications can have in the world. Keeping tabs on IBM as an industry leader can also be helpful to stay on top of some of the most important issues in data science and AI.
11. Oracle® AI & Data Science blog
One of the best features of Oracle AI & Data Science blog is its layout separated by topics of interest. The “Best Practices” category is ideal for people already working in the industry, and the “Learn Data Science” category offers posts with troubleshooting, tutorials for specific tools and more. Or, if your role in data science is connected to business decision-making, check out the “AI in Business” section.
Another wide-ranging hub for data science and related tech news, trends and opinions, Dataconomy is a worthwhile bookmark for anyone fascinated by the field. Here, you’ll find a well-organized site with articles like “Is Your Data ‘Normal’ Enough?”, “Chris Latimer Tells Ho to Use Real-Time Data to Scale and Perform Better” and “Secret Weapon of Big Companies: Database Marketing” to name just a few.
Stay smart with these data science blogs
As you can see, you have a lot of options to start sifting through—data science blogs for people who like a little humor, data science blogs for the highly technical-minded folks, data science blogs for professionals who want to understand how data fits into the business world. Our list only scratches the surface.
