How To Avoid Succumbing To Senioritis

It is not uncommon that colleges send letters to accepted students rescinding their offers due to poor performance in high school. If you're a high school senior, it is important not to slack off during your last semesters. The phenomenon commonly known as "senioritis" can hurt your chances of getting the education and career that you want. Here's how to avoid catching a case of your own, according to The College Board.

Keep Challenging Yourself
There are plenty of reasons why you would want to take it easy during your final year, especially if you have already been accepted into college, but don't! Instead, try these ideas:
1. Take challenging courses. Avoid saving elective classes or general education classes for the latter end of your education and take courses such as American Literature, Statistics, or an advanced placement course to prepare you for the challenging courses that lie ahead.
2. Study for advanced placement and college entrance exams to keep your mind sharp for what's ahead of you.
3. Go to your school's library and get ahead of the game by researching areas you know you'll be studying. You'll be prepared to excel in your future classes.

Stay Involved
Senior year is not the time to mentally check out. Stay active with extracurricular activities. Here are some ways to get involved:
1. Join an academic club if you're not already in one. This can help you develop skills to take with you later on.
2. Socialize with friends who you know won't be slacking off and ask them to make sure you stay motivated.
3. Choose to participate in volunteer work. Volunteering is both emotionally rewarding and great for your resume.

Go Above And Beyond
Even if you're not planning to change your habits during your final year, it never hurts to do more than what's asked of you.
1. Look for an internship. This will be a valuable addition to your resume and you will develop workplace skills that every professional needs.
2. Start working on a career-related project you've always wanted to try, like writing a research paper or developing a software program. You never know when it could come in handy!
