As we go through our everyday lives we tend to get into a groove; a groove that stems from accepting where we are in our lives and becoming accustomed to the people we interact with, and the places we frequent. As people, we have a need to feel comfortable, secure, and in control of so many things: our jobs, our family, our friends, our self-image, etc. However, this sense of security and control is only momentary because we never know what lies in store for us as we go from one day to the next. We do know change, whether positive or negative is constant and guaranteed.
Embracing change is difficult for many as anxiety and uncertainty can result. Although these are perfectly normal emotions to exude, it’s important to be optimistic when change takes place and to live life in between these occurrences. Some tips to help deal with change are as follows:
- When the change is positive, such as starting a new job, going back to school, planning a wedding, etc. take a deep breath and look at it as a new challenge and an opportunity to develop yourself, which ultimately will help you enjoy the journey as opposed to stressing out about it.
- When the change is negative and causes short term discomfort, remember that discomfort will eventually fade. Everything happens for a reason and even negative changes can set you up for better things to come. So, don’t get discouraged. Better days are ahead.
- In anticipation of a major change, hope for the best, but plan for the worse, so you can take a proactive approach to prepare for these events to reduce stress and anxiety.
- When dealing with multiple changes, try not to get overwhelmed. These are life’s trials, and they will ultimately help strengthen your “change muscles.” Not only will you get through this challenge, you will be that much more confident as you face obstacles to come.
Living in between change is living life to the fullest. So celebrate the good and press through the bad, as these experiences only mold us into the people we are.
